The Standout Feature of the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro Isn’t Its Camera or Its Processor, but Something That’s Quite Hidden

For the first time, the iPhones have a feature that will allow them to perform as expected.

On Monday, Apple introduced the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro. These new models show a more modest evolution compared to the previous generation. They feature a new processor, some changes in the camera, and an artificial intelligence system known as Apple Intelligence.

However, at the iPhone 16 launch event, Apple hardly addressed one of the most important new features. This feature, which users have been wanting for years, could mark a turning point in performance and battery life. For the first time, the iPhone includes a cooling system.

Apple hasn’t provided detailed information on how the cooling system works, so we’ll have to wait to test it thoroughly to determine its effectiveness. However, we do have some clues about how it functions.

The iPhone 16’s cooling system. The iPhone 16 will enhance thermal dissipation by using materials such as graphite inside the device. Apple has designed the distribution of the phone’s components so that heat is concentrated only in certain areas, promising a significant increase in sustained performance.

The company specifically mentions a 30% improvement in sustained performance, which is crucial for heavy gaming. This move makes sense considering that iOS is one of the few systems that supports 120 fps gaming of titles like Genshin Impact.

The iPhone 16 Pro’s cooling system. Apple uses a similar approach on the iPhone 16 Pro, although the execution isn’t identical. Again, the company uses graphite as the material to conduct heat from the chip to the chassis, which is made of aluminum but with a substructure made of the cooler material. Apple claims the Pro model offers a 20% improvement in sustained performance.

It might not be enough. Apple has chosen not to include a vapor chamber in its devices, which is one of the most advanced and effective heat dissipation systems available today. This mechanism involves a metal tube filled with a low-pressure liquid that transfers heat to lower the device’s temperature as it changes state between liquid and vapor.

Vapor chambers and heat pipes operate on similar principles. Both consist of a metal conduit attached to the component, such as a phone processor, to be cooled. This conduit is filled with a cooling fluid and has an exchange area where the heat is transformed into vapor, cooled, and condensed back to liquid form.

Throttling issues. Apple phones have suffered from throttling for years. This occurs when the phone overheats and starts to reduce its performance. In addition to decreased power, this leads to limited maximum brightness to prevent excessive energy consumption.

Improved thermal dissipation should enable the new iPhones to maintain peak brightness for longer periods and deliver sustained performance comparable to their main rivals.
