I've been in media for over a decade, but I've been marveling at the possibilities that technology brings us much longer. I believe we live in a world where the digital revolution is changing everything and that Xataka is the best place to write about it.

Very few home users purchase WinRAR, and the company seems to have finally accepted it. Each license costs $29, but the software includes a 40-day free trial. This is typically more than enough to decompress a one-time file received via email or downloaded from the Internet.

Win.rar GmbH is the company behind this iconic software. It recently surprised its X followers with some interesting messages. “What better way to support the software you’ve NEVER paid for than by buying a WinRAR bag? Do it! We dare y’all!” the company said in one post. You read that right–WinRAR is expanding beyond software and venturing into merchandise.

WinRAR Bags and Jackets

One of the most notable items in the catalog is the WinRAR Archive Messenger Bag. The product’s design cleverly mimics the iconic three-stacked books on the compression tool’s app icon. The manufacturer claims it’s made from 100% vegan leather and features a clip-on adjustable strap and a magnetic closure system. Its dimensions are 21.4 x 14 x 7 cm.

If you’re curious about the price of this accessory for computer enthusiasts, it’s higher than that of a WinRAR license. The bag costs $150, and shipping may add to the total depending on your location. For instance, if you want it shipped to New York City, the cheapest shipping option is $26.63, bringing the total to $176.63.

In addition to the bag, the company is selling a WinRAR jacket adorned with patches of the software’s icons. According to the product description, this 100% wool jacket features a quilted satin lining for enhanced comfort and thermal insulation. It costs $250, plus shipping.

To produce these items, WinRAR has partnered with tern, a company that manufactures the products in China. This strategy aims to generate additional revenue. However, the company’s primary business remains the sale of licenses to corporate and government customers, who are the main purchasers of the software.

WinRAR originated in Russia, where software engineer Eugene Roshal released the first version in the 1990s. The program is currently managed by Win.rar GmbH, a company registered in Bremen in Germany.
