GPT-4o is the latest version of Open AI’s artificial intelligence model. It will be available not only for those who pay for ChatGPT Plus but also for free ChatGPT users. At Xataka On, we'll you everything you need to know about this generative AI model.

What exactly is GPT-4o? What are the main differences from GPT-4? How do I use this new model? Find all the answers below.

What Is GPT-4o?

GPT-4o is a new and improved version of GPT-4, which means that the basis of its technology is the same. It has many similarities with the AI you can find in Microsoft's Copilot and other free solutions based on GPT-4's technology.

GPT-4o has many internal improvements and is quite revolutionary. If you don’t remember or don’t know, GPT is the artificial intelligence engine behind ChatGPT. It’s the technology these AI chatbots use, with different versions available. In the case of ChatGPT, the free version uses the GPT-3.5 model, while the paid version relies on the following iteration, GPT-4.

In the case of GPT-4o, it’s an evolutionary leap characterized by being natively multimodal. It's also low latency, which means it has quick response times, and can be used for real-time interactions. In short, this version will enhance the chatbot's text, audio, and visual capabilities.

One of the most outstanding features of this new model is that it will be available for free to all ChatGPT users, which means that it will be one of the main evolutionary leaps in history. However, paying users will enjoy GPT-4o first when OpenAI, its developer, starts distributing it.

Differences Between GPT-4o and GPT-4

One of the main differences in the new GPT-4o version is that it offers almost instantaneous responses due to reduced latency. While GPT-4 took about 5 seconds to respond, GPT-4o’s average response time is 320 milliseconds, although it will always depend on the user’s request.

The other significant difference is its multimodal processing, which means that it will understand both what users write to it and what they send it in images, audio, and video. As such, how people interact with the AI chatbot will be very flexible.

In demonstrations, OpenAI has shown that the model responds instantly. It can also answer in different tones of voice, laugh, sing, and demonstrate various moods.

The developers of GPT-4o will integrate this updated version into the ChatGPT app. Its features resemble something straight out of a sci-fi movie. For example, when responding to you with via voice, the chatbot will show emotions, which will help you feel more like you're talking to a real person.

It will also interpret your facial expressions and know if you're sad or happy. In addition, it can perform real-time translations and maintain the tone of the conversation. As such, if a user says something while laughing, ChatGPT will translate with the same emotion.

The ChatGPT app will be able to make jokes, sing, formulate sarcastic phrases, help you learn a language, and react to things you show it on your device camera, like a photo of a dog. Given these capabilities, many have stated that ChatGPT will soon resemble the AI assistant from a sci-fi movie Her.

How to Access GPT-4o

OpenAI is currently distributing GPT-4o to ChatGPT Plus and Team users. Once this rollout is complete, it will launch GPT-4o for free users. The release is iterative that will only include the new text and image-related features at first.

Paid users will have benefits such as a higher request limit when compared to free users. They will also be the first to access the real-time voice modes that free users will enjoy later on.

In addition, OpenAI is working on a ChatGPT application for MacOS. So, in the future, Apple’s users will be able to tap the Option + Space key combination to invoke the AI assistant. Eventually, ChatGPT could become a replacement for Siri.
