Windows 11 is not yet two years old, but we already have the first information about the operating system that will succeed in a while. Microsoft is already working on the next version, Windows 12, so we are going to tell you the most important news about this system, the data about its future launch, and all the information about this great renewal.

What are the new features in Windows 12?

According to the latest information, Windows 12 will be more modular. Its main goal will be to become a system that is much more adaptable to more devices with different form factors. A new Windows will be built from the ground up, adding just what is necessary.

Microsoft also wants Windows 12 to be optimized for specific chips. So they are working on a "silicon-optimized" version fully adapted to the SoCs that PCs are built on. This is similar to what Apple has been doing for some time with its Apple Silicon to get better synergy between hardware and software.

Another major innovation will come from the "separation of states" (CoreOS). This is a set of partitions that will be inaccessible to the user. The purpose of this partitioning is to allow for faster updates, improved factory reset, and a more secure system.

A greater presence of artificial intelligence is also expected, with the integration of ChatGPT in Bing, a more significant presence in Edge, and throughout the operating system.

At the design level, changes are expected related to the taskbar, which would become floating (similar to what we see in MacOS). Likewise, there would be changes to the system icons and their location.

In addition, it is expected that Microsoft will continue to strengthen its commitment to services such as Your Phone (to connect Android devices). In short, this version will be more modular, efficient, and with some design changes that will redefine the current lines.

When will Windows 12 be released?

It is too early to know the official release date of Windows 12. But considering that Windows 11 was launched in October 2021 and Microsoft's new update cycle will be completed in three years, we expect Windows 12 to arrive in the last quarter of 2024. October is the most talked about month, but there is no confirmation yet.

What are the minimum requirements for Windows 12?

The requirements for Windows 12 will be at least the same as for the previous version. Since a significant change in the system is expected, some items related to CPU and other PC components may increase. However, we will not know this information until the official presentation.

  • 64-bit processor (ARM / x86) at least 1GHz.
  • 4 GB of RAM.
  • 64 GB of storage (at least).
  • UEFI with secure boot support.
  • TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module).
  • Minimum 9-inch 1,366 x 768 px display.
  • DirectX 12 compatible GPU.
  • Internet connection.

How can I upgrade to Windows 12?

We will be able to upgrade to Windows 12 through Windows Update if there are no relevant changes in the system. When the update is available for our device, we will receive a notification that will allow us to officially upgrade to the new version.

It is also expected that it will still be possible to perform a complete manual installation, in case we want to install the operating system in a cleaner way and from an external drive.

Will Windows 12 be free?

Barring any surprises, Windows 12 will be a completely free version for all users with an active Windows 11 license. It will be enough to update our device to have a renewed license valid for the new version.
