In recent months, the renewable energy sector has witnessed the introduction of innovative gadgets utilizing solar panels, such as a solar-powered scooter and a solar sun visor. But what about solar panels on your head? Yes, you read that correctly. A European company recently launched a solar-panel hat designed to charge two devices simultaneously.
EcoFlow’s Power Hat. Although the Power Hat has been on the market for a couple of months, EcoFlow recently showcased it at CES 2025. In fact, this innovative accessory is already available for purchase at $129.
As the name implies, the hat has integrated solar panels designed to charge portable devices. Its design resembles a traditional oval safari hat, but it includes sections with monocrystalline silicon solar cells.
EcoFlow claims its hat can fully charge a 4,000 mAh phone in three to four hours.
How can it be charged? A small plastic container located at the back of the hat serves as an inverter, emitting an LED light to indicate charging activity. This box features rubber tabs that protect both a USB-A and USB-C port, allowing you to charge one or two devices simultaneously.
Efficiency of 24%. According to the company, the solar panels have an efficiency rating of 24% and provide a charging power of around 12 watts. However, 66% of the absorbed solar energy is converted into heat, which is a common characteristic of solar panels. Even the most efficient solar panels generally have limited performance. Manufacturers strive to minimize this heat loss in their designs.
EcoFlow also points out that the hat can generate a maximum of 5 volts and 2.4 amps of power, which is sufficient to keep your phone or tablet charged. However, the Power Hat doesn’t have a built-in battery, meaning devices must be connected directly with a cable.
Rugged and protective. The company claims that the hat is rugged enough for outdoor use. Each panel consists of discrete segments that can be folded down to nearly pocket size. The gadget is rated IP65 for water and dust resistance, although it’s important to note that you shouldn’t submerge it in water or put it in the washing machine.
Additionally, the hat offers exceptional sun protection, boasting a 0% UV penetration rate and a UPF 50+ factor. As such, it’s suitable for wearing in sunny conditions without the worry of sunburn or overheating.
Fashion or functionality? While it may not be featured in the next issue of Vogue, this technological advancement paves the way for more functional fashion that aligns with environmental needs.
However, it remains to be seen whether the hat generates waste that’s difficult to process or if the fashion industry, known for prioritizing aesthetics, will embrace this more practical approach. For now, EcoFlow’s Power Hat exemplifies how the future of fashion and technology can be both innovative and unpredictable.
