The first-look image of Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey is finally out. With this project, the British filmmaker reinforces his reputation as one of today’s most versatile directors. The film promises to be a true sword-and-sandal. Inspired by a timeless classic of world literature, The Odyssey will blend adventure and drama. The story will be set in Ancient Greece, a realm of fantasy and violence.

The Odyssey

A star-studded cast. Matt Damon will portray Odysseus. He’ll be joined by Tom Holland, Mia Goth, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, and John Leguizamo. The film is slated for release on July 17, 2026.

Odysseus’ comeback. Although Nolan hasn’t revealed much about his new film, it’ll likely be a unique adaptation of Homer’s epic poem. The story follows Odysseus as he journeys home to Ithaca after the Trojan War, accompanied by his crew and facing numerous dangers. From enchanting sirens to the lairs of the Cyclops, The Odyssey stands as one of the most influential works in the history of human creativity.

Promising details. Little is known about the upcoming film, but it shows promise. Nolan has written the script himself. Additionally, part of the film will be shot in Sicily. Production is slated to begin in the spring on the Favignana island, a location historians believe to be connected to Odysseus’ journey. Nolan recently garnered attention from fans of traditional film techniques when rumors emerged that the colossal Cyclops Polyphemus would be portrayed using a giant puppet rather than being created through CGI.

An ambitious director. Nolan’s ambition seems boundless. The Odyssey has mostly been interpreted through the lens of family adventure. However, it’s possible that the filmmaker will explore a deeper narrative, striving to remain faithful to historical reality. This aligns with his preference for “real” settings, further demonstrating that Nolan is unafraid to take on projects of substantial scale.

Multiple genres. Although Nolan is best known for his work in science fiction (Interstellar, Inception, and Tenet) and realistic superhero movies (The Dark Knight trilogy), his filmography is diverse. He’s also explored historical drama in films such as The Prestige and Oppenheimer, while his career began with complex thrillers like Memento. With The Odyssey, he’ll transition to a classic adventure film, a challenge that many directors don’t dare to face. Time will tell if Nolan can subvert this genre as he’s successfully done with the rest.
