Installing Windows XP, various Linux distributions, or even MacOS 9 is now possible on the iPhone. The news comes with another big arrival for the iPhone: Aptoide, an open-source independent Android app store, is now available and arrives as one of the first real alternatives to the App Store, at least in Europe.
But let's go back to Windows on the iPhone. Retro operating systems can now be installed on iOS with UTM SE, an emulator that allows you to virtualize software. It was initially available for MacOS and is now available on iOS through the App Store.
UTM SE describes itself as a retro PC emulator. You can download it from the App Store for free. It also has no ads or paid version, so you don’t have to spend a dollar to use it. You only need an iPhone with iOS 14 or later and to take into consideration that this app weighs 1.7 GB.
With this app, you can use your iPhone as a virtual machine to run Windows XP, Windows 7, some Linux distributions, MacOS, and more. It’s a relatively simple app: You only need to download the distribution, allocate memory to the virtual machine, and run it.
However, the installation process is not for everyone. It requires some knowledge of terminal apps to run and configure everything to work correctly.
UTM SE sets an important precedent: It’s the first time you can natively install an app that allows for the virtualization of PC operating systems.
