Apple Maps Has Left the Apple Ecosystem. You Can Now Try the Web Version, Which Aims to Compete With Google Maps

  • Apple Maps Web arrives as a public beta to browsers outside Apple’s control.

  • It’s not yet available in other languages or on Android, but it’s only a matter of time.

Apple wants to compete with Google on Google's turf. One of Google Maps’ strongest advantages is its cross-compatibility between all devices and between the app and the web version. On the other hand, Apple Maps was available as an app that you could only access from Apple devices. But that has changed.

12 years after the service launched, you can now use Apple Maps from your browser on non-Apple platforms. However, it isn’t yet available on all devices.

Apple Maps Web Is Now a Reality

One of Google’s approaches to services is making them available in-app and online. YouTube or YouTube Music are two examples, as well as Gmail—its Office environment—and Google Maps. However, Apple has always been more eager to encase its services in apps and only make them compatible with its devices.

However, it seems Apple is changing its tune. The company has gradually expanded its apps beyond its own devices. One example of this is Apple Music, which was first available on Android and then on the web. The next Apple product to make this leap is Apple Maps. As the company stated, this is a beta version of the service, but don’t worry—it’s a public test version, and you don’t have to register anywhere or use Apple credentials. Just click here, and that’s it.

The web version of Apple Maps is currently only available in English, but you can browse the maps and use them to plan your travel routes. In addition, Apple Maps lets you search for certain places, such as stores, and view information related to them, including their website, hours of operation, payment methods, phone numbers, user-uploaded photos, and reviews.

You can also use Apple’s Guides to get information about specific spots or view the search history and explore places near your current location, such as pharmacies, restaurants, subway stations, gas stations, hotels, and more.

Browsers and devices supported by Apple Maps Web:

  • Chrome and Edge on PC.
  • Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad.

If you’re considering using a certain trick to force Chrome or Edge to display a desktop view on Android, I’m sorry to say that it won't work with Apple Maps. However, the company said it's working to support more browsers and languages.

It also says that additional features, such as Look Around, will be available in future updates. This feature is Google’s version of Street View for Apple Maps, which allows you to view a place from the street to get a more detailed view.

Never fear. If you want Apple Maps on Android, it seems that it’s only a matter of time.
