It’s finally here. After endless leaks and rumors, Nintendo has announced the new Nintendo Switch 2. The console is official, showcasing (almost) all its features, including redesigned Joy-Cons that eliminate the current docking mechanism, a larger size, and the much-anticipated backward compatibility with Nintendo Switch games. The company also confirmed the date of the official unveiling.

What the new Nintendo Switch 2 looks like. As shown in the video, the Nintendo Switch 2 is significantly larger and slightly slimmer than its predecessor. It has more curved edges and a sleeker finish, featuring a black front and back while retaining the signature colors. The screen occupies more of the front panel.

The Joy-Cons are black, with color accents on the joysticks and docking mechanism. This marks a major shift from the previous generation. Instead of snapping in from the top, the Joy-Con attaches via a side connector and magnetization system. A small button, hidden behind the RT and RL buttons, allows for removal. Nintendo has concentrated the color accents on the part that connects to the console.

New stand and dock. The back has also been revamped, replacing the single-position stand with a system that allows the console to sit almost horizontally. The dock is slimmer and more rounded, leaving the top of the screen visible. It’s unclear whether Nintendo plans to use this area for additional display features, such as the time or widgets.

Backward compatibility. The Nintendo Switch 2 will support both physical and digital Switch games. The cartridge format appears unchanged. However, Nintendo noted that “some Nintendo Switch titles may be incompatible or not fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2.” More details will be shared soon.
