The ongoing rumors about the PlayStation 5’s successor have lasted longer than expected. For more than a year, experts have talked about the possibility of Sony launching a new console following the success of the PlayStation 4 Pro. On Tuesday, the company finally unveiled the PlayStation 5 Pro, which boasts significant technological improvements.

Here are the key details:

  • Release date: Nov. 7
  • Price: $699.99

During Tuesday’s presentation event, Mark Cerny, the architect behind all Sony consoles released since 2013 (PS4, PlayStation Vita, PS5, and now the PS5 Pro), outlined the differences between the original PS5 and this new model. Specifically, he explained that games can be played in two main modes: Fidelity (more details, movement at 30 fps, less polished control) and Performance (60 fps, much smoother graphically).

As it turns out, gamers choose the Performance mode three times out of four, which is why Sony has enhanced the PS5 in this area. Cerny summarized the improvements in three main points:

  • A more powerful CPU. The new PS5 Pro comes with 67% more Compute Units than the standard PS5 and 28% faster memory, enabling up to 45% faster rendering for games. Overall, this results in a much smoother gaming experience.
  • Advanced Ray Tracing. The latest Sony console doubles or even triples the performance of the current PS5, providing more dynamic reflection and refraction of light.
  • Playstation Spectral Super Revolution. That is, artificial intelligence-driven scaling. In practice, this means the PS5 Pro enhances image clarity by adding extraordinary detail to games.

As such, the PS5 Pro will double the frame rate of games, display distant details more clearly, and bring about various other visual improvements. According to Cerny, this is Sony’s most powerful console to date.

Unsurprisingly, this will be reflected in the price. Despite the rumors, there won’t be a price cut for the PS5, and in the end, the suggested retail price for the Pro will be $699.99. The console doesn’t include a Blu-Ray player, but it’ll be compatible with all PS5 accessories, including the removable disk drive.

In addition, the PS5 Pro will come with a 2 TB SSD. Other improvements include the PS5 Pro Game Boost, which can be applied to more than 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games that can be played on the PS5 Pro. This feature will improve the performance of compatible PS4 and PS5 games. Another new feature is Enhanced Image Quality for PS4 games, which will enhance their resolution similar to what the PS4 Pro did.

Some of the PS5 Pro Enhanced titles include Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, and The Last of Us Part II Remastered, among others.
