In a post-E3 era, companies in the video game industry have continued the tradition of holding events in June. This year, the cycle of video games events started on Friday with Summer Game Fest, which featured several announcements but left some people unimpressed.
Many were eager to see what Microsoft had in store after a challenging year. As it turns out, the Xbox Showcase 2024, held during Summer Game Fest, consisted of a good two hours of content, showcasing plenty of exciting games to look forward to.
Let’s have a look at all the games Microsoft announced at its Sunday’s event.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6
A new installment in the well-known Call of Duty franchise titled Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is set to continue the storyline from Call of Duty: Cold War. The game will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one and will also be released on PlayStation consoles. It's scheduled to be released on Oct. 25.
DOOM: The Dark Ages
At the Xbox Showcase event, we also got a sneak peek at a new prequel to DOOM called The Dark Ages. It takes place before the events of 2016’s DOOM and 2019’s DOOM Eternal. Developed by id Software, the game puts players in the role of DOOM Slayer as they battle in a medieval war in hell. If you’ve played Eternal, you’ll have a good idea of what to expect from this new installment.
The game is set to be released in 2025 and will be available on Xbox, Steam, and PS5 at launch, as well as on Game Pass.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
This year will also include the release of the new game Dragon Age: The Veilguard, developed by Bioware. Players will take on the role of an adventurer who can enlist the help of seven characters, each with their own unique story to discover within the game. The company has confirmed that the game will stay true to the essence of the saga, remaining a single-player RPG.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
One of the world premieres at the event was Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It’s scheduled to be released on Xbox X Series and S Series in 2025. The game is being developed with Unreal Engine 5 and visually looks very promising. In terms of gameplay, it appears to be an RPG with a traditional turn-based feel. This is the first game from studio Sandfall and appears to be very impressive.
South of Midnight
In 2023, we’d already seen the presentation trailer for South of Midnight from Compulsion Games, a studio owned by Microsoft. Now, we have the gameplay trailer for the game, which is set to be released in 2025 on Xbox X Series, S Series, and PC. It’ll be a third-person action-adventure game with a compelling aesthetic and a strong focus on adventure.
Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater
One of the main attractions of the event was Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which is a remake of the classic Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater from 2004. In addition to updated visuals, the game will feature a new and improved control system. For fans of the original, they’ll have the option to select the original control scheme.
Age of Mythology: Retold
The remaster of Age of Mythology will be released for Xbox and PC on Sept. 4. The graphics have been greatly improved compared to the original version, and fans of the franchise can be reassured that Microsoft has been doing a great job with the franchise lately.
Perfect Dark
It’s been 19 years since the release of the last Perfect Dark game. Joanna Dark will be returning in The Initiative’s upcoming game, which is being developed in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics. The game promises to offer plenty of action and spy movie elements. However, three years have passed since the game was announced, and there’s been no update on its progress. Unfortunately, the release date is still unknown.
Fable
Another game we’ve been eagerly anticipating is the new Fable. Finally, after a long time in the shadows, we were able to see an in-game video of the title being developed by Playground Games (the creators of Forza Horizon, indeed). Set to release in 2025, we’ll be returning to the kingdom of Albion.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle
Xbox spent 5 minutes at the Xbox Showcase 2024 talking about the new Indiana Jones game. Titled The Great Circle, it’s set between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. The game will feature a story that’s considered canon within the franchise, and the gameplay will be in first person. The game is being developed by the same team responsible for revitalizing the Wolfenstein franchise.
Avowed
Microsoft is currently in possession of both Bethesda, the parent company of The Elder Scrolls, and Obsidian, a highly influential and important studio in western RPGs. Obsidian has been working on Avowed, a role-playing adventure game, for years. So far, we’ve seen very little of the game, but it looks spectacular, especially for fans of games like Skyrim. It’s scheduled to be released in 2024 and, similar to other games under Microsoft Studios, it’ll be available on Game Pass from day one.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Ubisoft didn’t want to wait to show off the first gameplay of the new Assassin’s Creed Shadows. After the presentation a few days ago with a CGI trailer, we can finally see the new installment of the series in action with a couple of minutes of gameplay. It’s set to be released on Nov. 15
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will be released on Sept. 5 for Xbox and PC, and will be available on Game Pass from day one. This open-world game features a non-linear story and impressive visuals, returning players to the polluted area after many years since the original game.
Gears of War: E-Day
The classic Xbox franchise, Gears of War, is making a return. Instead of the anticipated Gears 6 to finish off the The Coalition trilogy, the new installment will be called Gears of War: E-Day. This game will serve as a prequel, set 14 years before the original 2006 game, and will focus on the events of Emergence Day experienced by Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. It’ll be built with the Unreal Engine 5.
Other Titles Announced at Xbox Games Showcase
The trailers above are the juiciest ones Xbox presented at its 2024 showcase, presumably because of how spectacular they were or the flashy nature of the franchise. However, there were many more trailers revealed at the event, which are listed below:
