Netflix is taking advantage of the Olympic atmosphere that we’re all immersed in to release a first teaser of the season two of Squid Game, the most successful series in the platform's history. In the teaser, we can see recognizable elements, like the participants’ green tracksuits, the masked guards’ characteristic red overalls, the masked guard in a black suit, and the recognizable sound of the hide-and-seek test with its terrifying giant executioner doll.

In other words, season two will include the most recognizable elements of the first season in detail, as expected. The big news? The release date is December 26, 2024. There will also be a third and final season, which will be released in 2025, so we won’t have to wait three years to see how this story ends.

However, we know almost nothing about the plot of these two new seasons. The teaser suggests a new competition with new participants and tests. It also shows the return of the protagonist from the first season. By announcing the third and final season at the same time as season two, Netflix suggests that, unlike the plot break we had to ensure at the end of the first season and self-conclusive year, we’ll have a grand final story divided into two seasons.

Squid Game letter

Even though we don’t know much about season two, Netflix dropped hints about what we can expect in a letter from series creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk: “Seong Gi-hun, who vowed revenge at the end of Season 1, returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting revenge? Font Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year.”

The big question is whether this year’s season will be able to match the impact of season one, which, let’s not forget, led to the surge in popularity of South Korean shows around the world.
