Two Sizes, Same Engine
The Pixel Watch 3 introduces a new feature: It’ll be available in two sizes. In previous generations, only a 41 mm body was available, but now customers can choose a larger 45 mm size. The larger size comes with a bigger screen, slightly heavier weight, and a larger battery. As a result, it offers a few more hours of battery life and takes a little more time to charge.
Google has maintained the sleek, minimalist design that’s characteristic of its Pixel Watches but has made a couple of changes to the screen. The first change is the reduction of the bezels by 16%, bringing the panel closer to the edge. The second change is the implementation of Actua technology, which increases the maximum brightness from 1,000 nits to 2,000 nits. This improvement makes it easier to view content in broad daylight. Additionally, both watches have a pixel density of 320 ppi and a 60 Hz refresh rate. They also feature a side button and crown for interacting with menus.
Moreover, Google has upgraded the sensor inside the Pixel Watch to provide more accurate metrics, drawing inspiration from Fitbit. In fact, the watch is capable of integrating with the Fitbit app to give users a comprehensive view of their metrics and track their physical activities.
Google has placed a strong focus on sports, particularly running. The watch utilizes machine learning to analyze aspects such as stride, vertical oscillation, and cadence. It also provides insights into rest, cardiovascular load, and blood oxygen levels. Access to more in-depth information depends on having Fitbit Premium, which also enables users to access personalized routines generated by AI.
In terms of the engine, Google has integrated a dual processor, which is becoming more common in the world of smartwatches. The Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 powers the device, while a Cortex M33 manages lighter tasks. In addition, the smartwatch is equipped with 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, and runs on Wear OS 5.0, which appears to be a blend of Wear OS and Fitbit OS.
Moving on to the battery, the 41 mm Pixel Watch 3 has a 307 mAh capacity, while the larger 45 mm model boasts 420 mAh. The smaller model provides up to 24 hours of battery life with the screen always on and can be fully charged in 60 minutes. On the other hand, the 45 mm model offers the same battery life and can be fully charged in 80 minutes. Both models can last up to 36 hours in battery saving mode, according to Google. We’ll determine the accuracy of these claims once we have the opportunity to test the watches.
