The last significant iPhone redesign came in 2020 with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, which also introduced 5G connectivity. Since then, there haven’t been any major changes to the format of these Apple phones, and rumors suggest that there won’t be any this year. But there’s a little surprise on the horizon and the promise of a unique revolution in 2025.
The iPhone 16 comes in four versions. Apple will apparently keep the same line as last year. There will be four models: the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Plus, the iPhone 16 Pro, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. All models will reportedly have 8 GB of RAM, essential for one of these devices’ great promises: AI.
Apple Intelligence is coming. One of the big selling points will be the arrival of AI capabilities, considering all new models in the family will supposedly support it. Still, there’s a problem: The rollout of Apple Intelligence will be slow and cautious, and there’ll be no significant revolutions here.
Action button for everyone. Last year, Apple added a physical button called "Action button" to replace the volume control that has been with us since 2007. The company will apparently include this new customizable element on the iPhone 16 line.
New “DSLR-like” focus button. Pro models will also likely have a new button on the right side. It'll work like the shutter button on DSLR cameras, allowing you to press it lightly to focus on the image, then press harder to take the picture.
Slightly larger screens. Displays are getting bigger. If true, while the iPhone 16 Pro will go from 6.1 to 6.3 inches, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will go from 6.7 to 6.9 inches. The Pro models will also reportedly see the introduction of the Apple A18, the company’s new mobile processor.
New iPhone SE in early 2025. The iPhone 16 line will reportedly arrive alongside a long-awaited product early next year: the new iPhone SE, which will be the first refresh since 2022. Rumors point to a device that will use the iPhone 14 form factor and feature both an OLED display and support for Apple Intelligence.
The iPhone 17 will be more groundbreaking. Unlike the conservative iPhone 16, the future iPhone 17 series will be different. In addition to the iPhone 17, we’ll supposedly have the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Still, we’ll also see a new, much more ambitious model: the “iPhone 17 Air”, which, if true, will reportedly feature an exceptionally slim design, although it won’t be as powerful as the Pro models. Thinness will eventually reach the Pro models, but not before 2027.
