An Ode to Refinement

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra

The first notable change in the Galaxy S25 Ultra (and the rest of the lineup) revolves around its design. Its appearance has three main alterations. The first change is the ring that encircles the camera lenses, which now resembles the design of the company’s foldable phones. This shift unifies the aesthetic across Samsung’s high-end devices, and I believe it creates stronger brand consistency than ever before.

The second change becomes apparent as soon as you pick up the phone. Samsung has significantly reduced the device’s weight. The Galaxy S25 Ultra now weighs 218 grams, which is 15 grams lighter than its predecessor. This reduction is noticeable, making the phone much more pleasant to hold in one hand. Additionally, the device is 15% thinner.

Finally, the last major change has to do with the phone’s corners. Last year’s Galaxy S24 Ultra had quite angular corners that made it uncomfortable to hold. The S25 Ultra now has smoother corners that enhance comfort without sacrificing the essence of its Ultra design.

Top-Notch Hardware and State-of-the-Art Software

On the hardware side, nearly everything remains the same as last year, except for the updated processor, which is now the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite. The memory, battery, and connectivity configurations are unchanged. The S25 Ultra’s screen has grown slightly to 6.9 inches and has thinner edges, which means its overall size hasn’t increased. It retains last year’s anti-glare treatment and debuts Corning’s new Gorilla Glass Armor 2.

The software is a major highlight of Samsung’s high-end lineup, now featuring the One UI 7 skin. This represents one of the most significant changes in Samsung’s user interface, both in design and functionality. The company has refined the interface, making it look more modern overall. Samsung has also updated many system icons, making the interface more visually appealing than the previous version.

The South Korean maker continues to offer seven years of updates, a field in which the company excels. Additionally, the S25 Ultra’s skin is based on Android 15, ensuring that users have access to the latest features and security improvements.

Samsung has significantly improved the software’s AI functionalities. Gemini is now the default assistant, and the image generation capabilities have seen remarkable advancements. Additionally, there are exciting new features, such as call recording with automatic transcription.

Some of these functions now operate locally, eliminating the need for an Internet connection and enhancing privacy in the AI experience. There’s also improved integration between apps and a contextual widget that provides different information throughout the day. A new screen selector allows users to analyze content and perform actions such as creating GIFs, taking screenshots, and copying text.

Overall, Samsung has designed these updates to make AI an integral part of daily life rather than a tool used sporadically.

A Camera Setup Focused on Video

Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra

The camera’s hardware is nearly identical to last year’s model. It still features a 200 MP main sensor, with a telephoto lens offering 3x and 5x zoom. The noticeable upgrade is in the ultra-wide lens, which has increased from 12 MP to 50 MP. Despite these similarities, there are significant improvements, particularly in video capabilities.

The Galaxy S25 Ultra now allows for recording in LOG format. This logarithmic format enables recording without final processing. As a result, a flatter visual style enhances video editing and coloring for more professional results–provided users know how to utilize it effectively. Additionally, Samsung has enhanced the professional video functions with the inclusion of a Zebra Pattern feature to help detect overexposure.

The company has partnered with Qualcomm to enhance the phone’s real-time noise reduction engine, which can detect moving subjects, static objects, and various changes in the scene. In other words, all these features operate in real time for optimal quality in final video processing.
