Elon Musk using Starlink to defy a Brazilian court’s order to block X in the country is the latest example of how he’s become a disruptive force in global geopolitics, surpassing the traditional role of business tycoons. He’s more than that.

Musk’s influence stems not only from his wealth but also from his control of companies that complement each other to enhance his impact, particularly those he wholly owns, such as X, Starlink, Neuralink, and xAI.

What’s more, Musk’s fusion of technological, financial, and media power renders him an unparalleled geopolitical player. He has the ability to sway international conflicts, superpower relations, and discussions on global freedom of expression.

Here are a few examples:

  • SpaceX and Starlink have played a significant role in conflicts such as the war in Ukraine.
  • Tesla, with its gigafactory in Shanghai, is a major factor in the technological rivalry between the U.S. and China.
  • The acquisition of Twitter, now X, has given Musk a global platform to spread his views and challenge governments.

Let’s take a closer look at Starlink. It was crucial in keeping Ukraine connected at the beginning of the Russian invasion. However, Musk later limited its use to prevent attacks on Crimea, citing the risk of escalation. Now, he’s using it to challenge the recent court ruling of the Brazilian government.

By contrast, Musk shows unusual deference towards China, which differs from his indifferent, if not defiant, attitude toward other political leaders. He mocks the Brazilian legal system in X, while he personally attends to the Chinese government with a fast trip to Beijing. Meanwhile, Tesla’s dependence on China is a concern in Washington because of worries about technology transfer.

Additionally, the situation with Brazil has sparked something significant. Musk’s confrontation with the Brazilian government shows how he challenges state authorities without hesitation. He does so under the guise of freedom of expression, even when the facts don’t align, which goes against regulatory efforts in the U.S., Europe, and other regions.

All of this makes Musk an unpredictable player on the global stage. His involvement in conflicts like Ukraine or Gaza garners both support and criticism. Governments witness how a billionaire known for his spontaneity acts unilaterally in disputes and conflicts.

Musk portrays himself as a champion of free speech and innovation, but he’s also an influential businessman who enjoys delving into geopolitical matters, often without much consideration for democratic institutions and the established international order.

He’s a different kind of player in the global arena, a tycoon who challenges and sometimes exceeds the power of traditional states. His influence is undeniably innovative, but it also raises questions about global governance in the digital age, for which no one has clear answers.
