Oura is undoubtedly the leading company in the smart rings segment. Without much fanfare or noise, it has launched a new model: the Oura Ring 4. This wearable is a subtle evolution of the previous generation, reducing its thickness, opting for a higher-quality finish, and improving its accuracy through algorithms.

Bye, bumps. Like the Galaxy Ring, the Oura Ring has historically had a series of bumps on the inside where the sensors are. But not this time. The inside is flat and not made of epoxy. The entire ring is now titanium, with a slightly lower profile and reduced thickness. Oura has added more sizes (from four to 15) and six colors. It also looks bigger than usual, like all smart rings.

Improved accuracy through algorithms. One problem with rings is that their accuracy is highly dependent on each finger and the position of the ring. The sensor must always be at the bottom, but the ring moves, it can (and does) lead to errors in the metrics. Since this is unavoidable, Oura has implemented new sensors and algorithms to improve the readings.

Oura says its new Smart Sensing technology consists of a sensor that goes from recording eight to 18 signals. According to the company, which cites an external study of 60 patients, the Oura Ring 4 improves SpO2 measurement by 120%, RDI by 15%, and reduces gaps in heart rate readings by 7% during the day and 31% at night.

Battery. This new wearable has eight days of autonomy, a one-day improvement over the Oura Ring 3, which had seven days.

The app gets a makeover. Oura has updated the app to make moving from an overview to more specific details easier. It has reorganized the main screen with new shortcuts and optimized the information display. There are also some new features: activity (to measure up to 40 types of exercise), stress measurement, women’s health monitoring, and Oura Labs, with experimental features. Oura Labs was already available on iOS and is now expanding to Android.

The subscription is still available. The Oura Ring 4 isn’t a standalone device and requires a subscription priced at $5.99 per month or $69.99 per year. The first month is free.
