Farewell to Concord, a paid video game that competed with titles like Overwatch.
Users who bought the game can ask for a full refund.
Sony will shut down Concord, the company’s latest game for PS5 and PC. On Tuesday, Sony announced that it’ll close the game’s servers on Friday, Sept. 6, just 14 days after its launch.
As a result, the game is no longer available for purchase on platforms like Steam and it’s been completely removed from the PlayStation Store. This is one of the biggest failures in the industry.
The Death of Concord After Eight Years of Development
After eight years of development and an estimated budget of around $100 million, the initial deployment of the first-person shooter title on Aug. 23 was disastrous.
Priced at $39.99, the game invited players to form squads to battle as outlaws and adventurers, working as mercenaries in a galaxy full of surprises, challenges, and other enticements.
However, the game received a disappointing public reception. During its time online, it had a peak of 697 concurrent players, according to SteamDB. The game’s creator, Ryan Ellis, “thank[ed] everyone who has joined the journey aboard the Northstar” as the game met its demise.
Ellis is the game director at Firewalk Studios, an 8-year-old studio that Sony has owned since 2023. “We have decided to take the game offline beginning September 6, 2024, and explore options, including those that will better reach our players,” the executive said in an official statement.
Now that Concord is being discontinued, users who purchased the game will be eligible for refunds. These refunds will be processed directly through the PlayStation Store, Epic Games Store, and Steam for the full purchase price.
Additionally, Concord was also released in physical copies for PS5. Those who bought the disc will need to go back to the place of purchase to ask for a refund and get their money back.
