The Amazon founder bought a new $80 million private jet.
It's been in service for just over a month and has already polluted the equivalent of one person over 17 years.
In addition to being an avid mansion and art collector, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has also shown a great passion for private jets, having amassed a small fleet of three aircraft. In fact, the billionaire just upgraded one of them, purchasing a Gulfstream G700, the most advanced private plane on the market.
According to data posted on X by ElonJet founder Jack Sweeney—the college student who tracks the private planes of the rich and powerful, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and pop singer Taylor Swift using public flight data—Bezos debuted his new plane on July 10, 2024. The date was just in time to take it on vacation, and boy did he take advantage of it.
One of the first to be delivered. Bezos’ Gulfstream G700, valued at approximately $80 million, is positioned as one of the company’s flagship vessels for private transportation.
The Federal Aviation Administration certified the Gulfstream G700 in March, allowing it to be delivered and validated for passenger service after nine months. Qatar Airways was the first to receive two G700s for its Qatar Executive service. Musk, who also ordered one, has yet to obtain his.
The Rolls-Royce of the skies. To say that the Gulfstream is the Rolls-Royce of the skies in terms of luxury and comfort on board isn’t entirely coincidental. Rolls-Royce's Pearl 700 engines power the aircraft and have a range of up to 9,000 miles, allowing Bezos to take non-stop trips to destinations like Miami and Tokyo.
The aircraft seats 19 people in five cabins and has two lavatories on board, allowing the cabin configuration to be customized to accommodate beds or relaxation areas.
Bezos has already used it. According to JetSpy, Bezos’ plane has the tail number N11AF. It’s registered under the operator’s domain, TVPX Aircraft Solutions, a service company that maintains the privacy of the aircraft’s actual owner.
Business Insider reported that the billionaire’s G700 was in Ibiza last weekend, despite attempts to go unnoticed by using a temporary registration provided by the FAA’s ICAO aircraft address program, which ensures aircraft owners’ privacy. Local Ibiza media outlets also reported that the Amazon founder’s spectacular sailboat Koru was seen around the island.
39 days and 28 flights. What's most striking about Bezos’ new private jet is neither its price nor its features, though. Undoubtedly, the most shocking aspect of the first days of Bezos’ G700 is its impact on carbon emissions.
In just 39 days of operation, the plane has already emitted about 264 tons of carbon dioxide, which is 17 times the annual emissions of the average American, according to a study of per capita emissions published in Our World in Data. This data underscores the environmental impact of the intensive use of private jets, an issue of growing concern in the context of the climate crisis.
