On Wednesday, Warner Bros. Discovery released the first trailer for Dune: Prophecy, a drama series that will serve as a prequel to Dune, Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 hit movie.
Dune: Prophecy is inspired by Brian Herbert’s literary work, specifically his Sisterhood of Dune novel, co-authored with Kevin J. Anderson. Like the book, the upcoming show is set in a distant past.
A Story Set 10,000 Years Before Paul Atreides Was Born
Villeneuve’s two Dune films follow the adventures of Paul Atreides on the fictional desert planet Arrakis. In contrast, Dune: Prophecy is set 10,000 years before these events, depicting a time of chaos and conflict.
The new Max original will focus on two Harkonnen sisters who unite to combat the threats facing humanity. They will go on to establish a sect known as the Bene Gesserit to confront these growing dangers.
As Dune fans probably remember, this sect survives through time. In Villeneuve’s movie, Atreides’ mother is part of this powerful organization that trains its members’ bodies and minds so that they can obtain superhuman abilities.
The main cast will include Emily Watson as Valya Harkonnen and Olivia Williams as Tula Harkonnen. Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, and Jade Anouka also set to star. In addition, Alison Schapker is Dune: Prophecy's showrunner, while Anna Foerster serves as the executive producer and director for several episodes.
The release of the first trailer is very good news, according to director Johan Renck, who was originally set to direct the show but exited the Max series in February 2023. Renck said the project faced several setbacks and ultimately evolved into something different.
Dune: Prophecy will premiere this fall on Max.
