We’re currently seeing how artificial intelligence is transforming various aspects of our society, such as productivity, entertainment, and medicine. Andrej Karpathy, a founding member of OpenAI and former head of AI at Tesla, appears prepared to leverage the power of algorithms in the field of education.

In a post on his X account, the prominent research scientist announced that he was creating a new company called Eureka Labs. The company aims to enhance education in reach, enabling a large number of people to learn, and variety, allowing individuals to study a wider range of subjects than is currently feasible.

Human Teachers + AI Assistants

Karpathy believes that the ideal way to learn anything is to have a personalized tutor who is not only an expert in the subject matter but also deeply passionate with a didactic style. However, currently, the way knowledge is passed on is a bit different. In other words, there isn’t a teacher for every student.

Eureka Labs aims to revolutionize education by overcoming barriers such as language. The platform wants to leverage generative AI to power AI teaching assistants that are optimized to guide students through their courses. This concept is what Karpathy refers to as “Teacher + AI symbiosis.”

It’s important to note that teachers won’t be replaced by algorithms. Instead, they’ll continue to design the course materials but will be supported by technology to enhance the teaching process. In his posts, Karpathy stated, “If we are successful, it will be easy for anyone to learn anything.”

The first step of this ambitious project will be an AI course called LLM101n. Its goal is to guide students in creating a large language model (LLM) for storytelling.

“We are going to build everything end-to-end from basics to a functioning web app similar to ChatGPT, from scratch in Python, C and CUDA, and with minimal computer science prerequisites. By the end you should have a relatively deep understanding of AI, LLMs, and deep learning more generally.”

It’s worth noting that the Eureka Labs website is still in its initial stages. While you’ll need to wait to find out how the platform will function, we do know that students will be required to pay a membership fee to access the content.

On a side note, Karpathy not only co-founded OpenAI, but after his time at Tesla, he returned to the AI company to work on GPT-4 and ChatGPT. During his time at the Elon Musk-led company, he led the computer vision team working on Tesla’s Autopilot system.
