This Is What the New Google Chromecast Will Reportedly Look Like: Goodbye to the Dongle, Hello to the Set-Top Box

There have been rumors swirling about a renewed version of the Google Chromecast for some time. Now, new information suggests that significant changes are imminent.

On Monday, 9to5Google published images of the device's reportedly new design and revealed that it may possibly be rebranded as the “Google TV Streamer.” If Google ends up confirming this, we’ll be saying goodbye to the Chromecast branding.

According to the leaked images, the new product features a redesigned format, with a slightly elongated remote control that repositions some buttons. The Back and Home buttons are now situated in the first row below the digital pad, and the microphone button is now represented by a generic icon, rather than the Google Assistant icon found on the current Chromecast remotes.

In addition, Google has apparently relocated the volume control to the front of the device, and a volume mute button has been added along with shortcuts for YouTube and Netflix. Furthermore, there’s an on/off button and a customizable button called the Magic button.

The device has reportedly transitioned from the HDMI dongle format to a set-top box design, resembling a small “box” that connects to the TV and looks similar to a small wireless charging base like the one for the Pixel Tablet.

Based on the leaked images, it appears that two cables come out of the small box, likely for charging and to provide an HDMI connection. It’s unclear if there are any other connectors, but it’d be reasonable to assume that Google has also included an RJ45 jack for Ethernet networks.

Rumors suggest Google will unveil the new Chromecast on August 13, alongside the launch of its new Pixel 9. It’ll be interesting to see if the new product includes any new software features or more powerful hardware.

The price is currently unknown, but historically, Chromecast has been priced below the $70 mark. However, this new product might aim to set a higher standard and become a premium option, competing with products like Amazon’s Fire TV Cube.
