2024 is proving to be a particularly important year for iOS. New changes to the DMA have forced Apple and other giants to make a move, making iOS 17 finally open to third-party apps, both in alternative marketplaces and via web downloads.

iOS 18 aims to be one of the most significant releases in Apple's history. In a year when AI is the talk of many of its competitors, this new version would come with Siri as the protagonist and her intelligence as an ally.

When Will iOS 18 Be Presented?

Apple is a bit predictable when it comes to its releases, as it tends to repeat dates on an annual basis. We do not yet know the exact day, but unless there is a surprise, iOS 18 will be released during WWDC 2024. This is the developer conference that Apple holds every year, and the first day is typically dedicated to the first versions of its new operating systems.

Thus, iOS 18 will be released, at least in its developer betas, in the first weeks of June. Although these betas are aimed at a specific profile, it is possible to install them on any iPhone that does not have a registered Apple developer account.

As for the final version, it should follow the usual schedule. The beta versions would have life and different iterations throughout the summer to close the definitive version in September, a few days before the launch of the iPhone 16.

Which iPhones Will Be Upgraded to iOS 18?

Buying an iPhone is buying years of support, and no less is expected with iOS 18. As usual, Apple has not yet announced which iPhones will be upgraded to the new version. But given that the iPhone Xs and Xr are the base models, it’s easy to predict that the iPhone 11 will be the new starting point.

What’s New in iOS 18?

iOS 18 seems to be a somewhat complex version, as every time Apple wants to make a significant change in its operating system. Gurman said that its development was stopped to correct most of the bugs generated, something that usually occurs every time Apple develops a version full of new features. According to Gurman, iOS 18 will be one of the main iOS updates in the company’s history.

The core of iOS 18 would be artificial intelligence, a considerable leap to catch up with Google, and the integration of Gemini in phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra or the Pixel 8 Pro. This AI would be integrated directly into the operating system, opening the door to new translation integrations, intelligent suggestions in native apps, and, most importantly, Siri.

For years, Siri has been the ugly duckling of voice assistants. The reason is simple: Apple doesn’t collect as much user data as its competitors, which limits what Siri can do. Starting with iOS 18, Siri would be more powerful, a kind of conversational assistant with Apple’s own ChatGPT.

What About the Design of iOS 18?

It would also be a significant version with visual changes. According to The Verifier, we would see part of the Vision Pro design language in iOS 18 to unify the UI of its operating systems.

A redesign in the system icons, perhaps part of this translucent aesthetic applied to apps like the camera, and some refinements in the design of native apps. The sky’s the limit, keeping in mind that Apple does not usually make radical changes to the design of its systems.
