XGIMI’s Latest Portable Projectors Feature Something Particularly Unique: An Unclassifiable Design

  • XGIMI introduces four new models: Horizon S Max, Horizon S Pro, Elfin Flip, and Halo+.

  • The Horizon S Max model delivers 3,100 ISO lumens of brightness and is IMAX Enhanced and Dolby Vision certified.

The portable projector market is becoming increasingly competitive. Users now have distinct options that would have been hard to imagine two or three years ago. Prices have also dropped significantly. During IFA 2024, several brands unveiled their new offerings, and one of the ones that has attracted attention for the exotic design of its projectors is the Chinese company XGIMI.

The new Horizon S Max, Horizon S Pro, Elfin Flip, and Halo+ projectors have a lot in common when it comes to technology but are very different in their design. Most importantly, their aesthetic approach isn't whimsical. The goal isn’t to be different for the sake of being different but to fit as naturally as possible into the various scenarios where users might need a projector. Let’s see what these four devices have to offer.

XGIMI Horizon S Max and Horizon S Pro

The most striking feature of these two projectors is the swivel mount. It allows a horizontal adjustment of 360 degrees and a vertical adjustment of 135 degrees. This flexibility isn’t bad. In practice, it should enable users to project in any direction. In addition, both feature Screen Adaptation 5.0. This technology automatically resolves focus, keystone correction, screen alignment, and color matching to the wall surface.

Both devices have very high color accuracy (ΔE < 1) and dynamic contrast of 1,000,000:1.

Furthermore, both projectors feature a tri-color laser image engine working in conjunction with an LED light source. Their native resolution is 4K UHD. According to XGIMI, both devices have very high color accuracy (ΔE < 1) and dynamic contrast of 1,000,000:1. These features look really good. Its two speakers driven by many 12-watt amplifiers are also worth mentioning. The operating system is Android TV 11.

The Horizon S Max and Horizon S Pro share all the specifications we’ve reviewed so far but aren’t identical. The Horizon S Max has a maximum brightness of 3,100 ISO lumens and dual IMAX Enhanced and Dolby Vision certification. It costs $1,899. The other projector, the Horizon S Pro, delivers 1,800 ISO lumens and is Dolby Vision certified but not IMAX Enhanced. The price for the second model is $1,299. Both projectors will be available in mid-October.

XGIMI Elfin Flip

The design of this portable Full HD projector is very exotic. Its stand allows users to point it in any direction. The most exciting thing is that despite being as compact as you can see in the picture, it can deliver 400 ISO lumens and project images up to 150 inches—not bad at all. Like the previous projectors, it can automatically adjust focus, make keystone corrections, improve screen alignment, and match color to the wall surface.

This projector’s operating system is XGIMI OS. It has two speakers driven by two 3-watt amplifiers and is Dolby Audio compatible. Finally, it’s surprisingly light, weighing only 2.6 pounds. It will be available in mid-September for $399.

XGIMI Halo+

This projector isn’t new in XGIMI’s catalog, but it offers a significant innovation compared to the previous revision: It now integrates Google TV. In any case, its image engine is a DMD chip (DLP) with 1080p resolution that works side by side with an LED light source capable of delivering a maximum brightness of 700 ISO lumens. According to XGIMI, its lifetime is 25,000 hours. Another note: This projector supports HDR10 and HLG content.

Regarding sound reproduction, it has a pair of Harman/Kardon-tuned speakers driven by as many 5-watt amplifiers. This Halo+ can handle DTS-HD, Dolby Audio, and Dolby Digital Plus sound, among other formats. This projector will hit stores in September with a price tag of $799.
