The days when buying a phone with a MediaTek processor was problematic are long gone. I recently had the opportunity to test the OPPO Find X8 Pro, which features the company’s Dimensity 9400, and found it to be more energy efficient than other devices equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite.
The situation is quite similar in the mid-range segment. Qualcomm’s flagship mid-range processor currently is the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3. Meanwhile, MediaTek has made a significant move with its Dimensity 8400 Ultra, which looks to be more powerful and efficient on paper.
POCO, a Chinese brand owned by Xiaomi, historically favored Qualcomm in its X Pro range. However, it’s recently shifted its focus entirely to MediaTek for the first time. This signals a clear message: The Dimensity series offers a cost-effective solution for manufacturers and remains a solid choice for users.
For instance, according to Geekbench scores, the Dimensity 8400 Ultra is 45% more powerful in single-core performance and 94% more powerful overall than the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3. In comparison, Qualcomm’s chip is much closer to MediaTek’s 7300, which is targeted at budget mid-range devices.
Qualcomm made a significant impact with its Snapdragon 8 Elite. However, the company now faces the challenge of enhancing its mid-range lineup to compete more effectively. It needs to approach the mid-high range that previously performed well with the 860 and 870 models. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is a step in that direction, but it’s primarily aimed at the high-end market.
