We break down how to transfer your SMS messages when switching devices, ensuring you don’t lose important texts.
This article covers three scenarios. First, we’ll explain how to move text messages between phones using the same operating system—either Android or iOS. Then, we’ll cover how to transfer messages when switching between operating systems.
Transferring SMS Messages Between Android Devices

Keeping your SMS messages when switching Android phones depends on the app you use. Some apps allow you to back up and restore SMS messages using the same account on a new phone. Google Messages, for example, offers this feature.
Before switching phones, install the Google Messages app from Google Play. This will save your SMS in your Google account. Then, after installing Google Messages on your new phone, you can retrieve your messages and continue using them.
Many phone manufacturers also provide tools for transferring data, including SMS, from an old phone to a new one. This process usually involves connecting both devices and following the transfer steps provided.
Transferring SMS Messages Between iPhones
Transferring messages from iPhone to iPhone is the easiest method. By default, messages sync to iCloud, but it’s best to check your settings before switching phones. If iCloud sync is enabled, your messages will be downloaded automatically when you sign in to your new iPhone with the same Apple ID.
Apple also offers a phone setup assistant that lets you transfer data by connecting your old and new iPhones directly or placing them side by side for a wireless transfer.
Transferring SMS Messages Between Android and iPhone

Transferring SMS between Android and iPhone is more limited. You’ll need to use the new phone’s setup app and connect your old device to complete the transfer.
Another option is to migrate data beforehand. Google offers an iOS app called Android Switch, available in the App Store, which copies contacts, SMS, and other data to your Google account. When setting up your new Android phone, this data will sync if you use Google’s native apps.
Conversely, Apple provides an app on Google Play called Move to iOS, which allows you to transfer data from an Android phone to an iCloud account.
