Galaxy AI: What Is It, Features and Supported Samsung Devices

Samsung introduced Galaxy AI, a new artificial intelligence that is integrated directly into several features on its phones.

Galaxy AI is an artificial intelligence system with multiple functions for the new Samsung phones. It’s not an AI with specific features but a foundation for various options on the company’s devices.

In this article, we’ll explain what Galaxy AI is and which features on the Samsung phones will use this new artificial intelligence. Lastly, we’ll go through the list of all the Galaxy models that support Galaxy AI besides the new Galaxy S24 line.

What Is Galaxy AI?

Samsung recently introduced Galaxy AI in hopes of entering the world of artificial intelligence. The launch took place at the Unpacked 2024 event, where the new Galaxy S24 family was also released. This AI technology is integrated natively into the phone, which powers some of its new features.

In 2023, we witnessed a significant AI revolution with the popularization of various chat systems like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Bard, as well as image generation tools like DALL-E or Midjourney. Additionally, specific devices, including Rabbit R1, the Humane AI Pin, or the Rewind Pendant, have been developed so you can access AI capabilities anywhere.

However, some of the AI systems we’ve just mentioned require a specific web or app to function, as they’re integrated into other apps or services. Others are standalone devices that you have to carry with you in addition to your phone.

Samsung has taken a different approach by integrating AI into its phones to power various features. This move makes AI more practical and useful in daily life. Upon its release, Galaxy AI is integrated into several of the features that the manufacturer has introduced with the latest Galaxy S generation.

What all of that means is that Galaxy AI is not a specific app or a feature in itself but rather a technology used for various purposes and some of the phones’ features.

What Features Does Galaxy AI Have?

The latest Galaxy phones have several new features that use Galaxy AI to offer you a more efficient and convenient user experience.

One of them is Circle to Search, a feature developed in collaboration with Google. With this feature, you can search for any item or image that appears on your screen. For instance, if you’re using social media or watching a video online, you can easily select the item you want to search for and the search results will appear. Additionally, you can add text to ask any questions related to the selected item.

Another feature is Live Translate for phone calls. If you make a call to someone who speaks a different language, the AI will translate what you say to the other person. This enables you to communicate with anyone on the phone, even if they don’t speak the same language as you or don’t own a Samsung phone. You can customize settings such as whether you want to hear the other person or just the translation.

But this is not all–Galaxy AI also enables the Interpreter mode, which will help you converse with people you meet in person. This mode works by listening to what a person says and then translating it on the screen. For instance, if you speak in English, your phone will translate what you say to the other person’s language and vice versa. Alternatively, you can type the messages you want the feature to translate.

Moreover, Samsung phones also have a built-in AI translator on their keyboard. You can use this to get real-time translations of what you’re texting into another language. Additionally, it offers grammatical and style suggestions to improve your message.

This translating feature is integrated into the interface of the app you’re using. Galaxy AI can analyze any text you receive from messaging apps like WhatsApp and then translate it for you. This is possible due to Samsung’s collaboration with messaging companies like WhatsApp, which enables the keyboard to perform these kinds of actions.

Galaxy AI enables other features, such as analyzing handwritten text in the Samsung Notes app when the S-Pen is used. It also allows you to transcribe or format it, providing you with suggestions and summaries. Plus, you can use artificial intelligence to create wallpapers.

The Samsung Voice Recorder app can now transcribe from voice to text thanks to the new AI capabilities. It can also distinguish between different speakers or summarize the content of a voice recording. Last but not least, the Samsung Internet browser uses Galaxy AI to translate websites or summarize articles, while the Samsung Gallery app features a generative photo editor to add elements to a photo or make edits using AI.

What Samsung Phones Support Galaxy AI?

Galaxy AI will be gradually rolled out to various Samsung phone models. The first models to have it are the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. However, it’ll later be available on other models over the next few months.

Here’s the full list of Samsung phones that support Galaxy AI along with the One UI 6.1 customization layer:

Samsung has stated that “many of the features” will be available, and the company placed a lot of emphasis on the Exynos 2400 processor’s AI capabilities during the event. Therefore, it’s possible that some of the Galaxy AI-enabled features are exclusive to the S24 line or later.
