Copilot+ is Microsoft’s newest artificial intelligence announcement. Users will now have a set of AI functions in Windows 11, but only on specific devices with the Copilot+ PC branding.
First, we’ll explain briefly what Copilot+ for Windows 11 is. Then, we’ll tell you what new functions it will incorporate into the operating system (OS) and explain how you can use it.
What Is Copilot+?
Copilot is Microsoft’s artificial intelligence chatbot. It’s a generative AI like ChatGPT, but it’s also integrated into various Microsoft services, such as Windows and Edge, and other tools to give them new AI-based functions.
Copilot+ is a set of new AI-based features for Windows 11. It’s much more potent than the normal Copilot and you'll need specific hardware and minimum requirements designed precisely for it in order to access the features.
So, computers with Copilot+ will have several additional AI-based features, ranging from improved image quality to automatic translations.
What New Functions Does Copilot+ Have?
As mentioned earlier, Copilot+ will add a series of new features based on artificial intelligence to the computers under the Copilot+ brand. Here’s a list of the new features and a brief description of how they work:
- Recall: This is one of the best features. It remembers and helps you recover things you've done. You can ask Windows to find any task you’ve performed on the OS, similar to the Rewind feature for macOS, but natively integrated into Windows.
- Live Captions: It’s a real-time translator. Windows AI can convert audio to another language with subtitles in more than 40 languages. At first, it will only be available in English.
- Auto Super Resolution: It will improve image quality and size using AI.
- Cocreator: This is like the version of Copilot available on the web, but better. The main difference is that it lets create images and text without an Internet connection.
- Windows Studio effects: AI will improve the lighting and styles of the your device's camera in real-time.
What Do You Need for Copilot+?
Copilot+ only runs on Windows if your device meets specific requirements. First, your computer must include a neural processing unit (NPU) with at least 45 TOPS.
Only a few computer chips have such capabilities. Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Series is the first to meet this threshold. Many new laptops from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung include Snapdragon X Series chips and offer the Copilot+ features.
As such, you can’t get Copilot+ features on your current Windows computer. You’ll need to get a new PC or upgrade your current device to a chip that includes this NPU requirement. (You can identify the computers with the new AI functions by looking for the Copilot+ PC branding).
Computers with these types of chip aren’t on the market yet but will arrive this year. With CoPilot+ , Microsoft aims to offer a Windows options in the artificial intelligence race.
