You don’t need Apple Intelligence for something so simple.

The latest iOS 18.1 beta includes a new feature called Clean Up. It’s part of Apple Intelligence and allows users to remove people from photos. This feature is available in the iPhone Photos app, but not in Google Photos. Currently, Apple Intelligence is only available on U.S. iPhones and won’t be available in other markets until 2025. In addition, it’ll only work on the new iPhone 16 and the iPhone 15 Pro (but not on the iPhone 15).

In this post, I’ll show you how to remove people from photos for free, regardless of your iPhone model. The only downside is you’ll be giving your photo to Google.

Downloading Google Photos. Even though it’s the default gallery on some Android phones, you can still download Google Photos for free on your iPhone. The app is completely free, but you’ll need a Google account to use it. If you’ve never used a Google account because you only use iCloud, you should know that you also have 15 GB of storage completely free.

It’s important to note that in order to remove people from a photo, you have to meet two requirements. First, the photo must be stored on Google servers, meaning it must have a backup on Google Photos.

Second, the processing is done in the cloud, so you’ll need a network connection, either LTE or Wi-Fi.

Removing people from iPhone photos

Google takes care of analyzing what’s left over. If you have a picture with subjects in the background and people behind them, Google will inform you that it can remove the people in the background. Simply click on Erase all and, as if by magic, it’ll remove the people behind you.

But the app goes much further. The Magic Eraser is included in Google Photos for free and is one of the editing options it offers. You just need to open the photo, click on edit, and select Magic Eraser.

Of course, you can’t just delete people. You can also delete any element of a photo by simply selecting it.

Apple’s interesting new approach. Over the last few years, Apple has been one of the biggest purists when it comes to photography. While its rivals have implemented AI functions to enhance photos at the expense of not looking natural, Apple has always been adamant about not wanting to alter reality.

With the Clean Up feature, this ban has been lifted. It’s a significant step for an Apple that isn’t afraid to offer AI modification tools. The company may surprise us in the future with generative editing functions, just like Google is doing.
