Instagram will allow users to access Edits, a video editor similar to CapCut.
Meanwhile, both Bluesky and X are adding video feeds on their platforms.
The uncertainty surrounding the future of TikTok and other ByteDance apps in the U.S. is prompting its main competitors to act quickly. X, Bluesky, and Instagram recently announced several new developments aimed at attracting users who may leave the Chinese-owned platform. Unsurprisingly, these initiatives are focused primarily on video content consumption.
A new dedicated video tab on X. Visual content has been part of X for some time. Although the platform initially centered around microblogging, in the last few years, images, videos, live streams, and audio spaces have become increasingly popular. On Monday, X introduced a new video tab. It’s located at the bottom of the screen, alongside the home, search, Grok, notifications, and messages icons.
When users tap the video tab, they’re presented with a TikTok-like experience. A personalized recommendation algorithm curates videos on a wide range of topics, including entertainment, sports, and news, and displays them one after another. To navigate through the content, users can simply swipe up and down.
Did you say… feeds for video? Bluesky is also embracing a TikTok-style experience. The platform gained a massive number of users after X owner Elon Musk acquired Twitter. Now, it’s trying to attract TikTok refugees with new custom feeds for video. Users can swipe vertically to navigate the content in these feeds. The update is currently being rolled out.
Edits: Instagram’s CapCut alternative. In addition, Instagram introduced a video editing app called Edits. This comes as legislation threatens the future of TikTok in the U.S., impacting not only that platform but also ByteDance’s other apps, like CapCut. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said that “there’s a lot going on in the world right now” and emphasized the need to provide tools for creators.
While this is more of a promise than a reality, Edits aims to offer a diverse range of video editing features, including filters, AI animations, background replacement, audio enhancement, automatic captioning, and more. However, you’ll have to wait until it becomes available. It’s expected to launch on March 13, initially for iPhone users.
TikTok is back, but its future remains uncertain. Over the weekend, the Chinese social media platform temporarily shut down in the U.S. However, it went back online after President Donald Trump promised to give the platform more time to negotiate a potential sale agreement. He also said that companies involved in restoring the service wouldn’t face penalties, although the risk of possible fines still lingers.
While Trump has extended the deadline to enforce a ban, the law still stands. ByteDance must sell its U.S. operations in order to continue its long-term business in the country. China’s foreign affairs minister, who previously opposed any divestment, is now adopting a more flexible approach and assured that the government won’t interfere in any potential sale agreement.
